Ogaden oil exploration projects veteran passes away

Abakoyas, head of the Ethiopian Oil and Gas Exploration and Development Enterprise and the Calub Gas Exploration S.C., passed away on July 31.
Jihad, known as the father of the Calub natural gas project by his colleagues, was hospitalised in New York, United States. His body was transported to Addis Ababa last Thursday and was laid to rest at the Kolfe Mosque. His family, relatives, friends, colleagues and senior government officials attended the funeral. Jihad, who is aged 69, is survived by four children (two sons and two daughters).

Jihad was born in 1944 in Jimma town. He attended his primary education in the Jimma Yekuno Amelak School in Jimma. He graduated from the Jimma Agricultural Technical School in 1963. Jihad studied Geology and Mining Engineering (1964-1968) in Friendship University in Moscow. He obtained his second Master’s degree in Geophysics from McGill University in Montreal, Canada.

Jihad served the Ethiopian Ministry of Mines as a mining Engineer and the Ethiopian Geological Survey as a senior geologist from 1968-1971. He was general manager of the Ethiopian Oil and Gas Exploration and Development Enterprise from 1982-1994. During his tenure of office at the Ethiopian Oil and Gas Exploration and Development Enterprise, Jihad successfully led the oil and gas exploration projects in different parts of the Ogaden region. The Ethiopian Oil and Gas Exploration and Development Enterprise used to work in collaboration with the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR) company called Soviet Petroleum Exploration Expedition (SPEE).

Later the Ethiopian Oil and Gas Exploration and Development Enterprise was disbanded and Calub Gas S.C. was established in 1985 with the view of exploiting the natural gas deposit in the Ogaden region, Calub locality. Jihad was responsible for the establishment of the S.C. He served the company as general manger until it was disbanded in 2005 Jihad retired in 2005. and has been consulting various companies and the Ethiopian government.

Those who worked with Jihad said he was emotionally attached to the Calub gas exploration project. Though Jihad dedicated most of his life to the Calub gas project, he was unable to see the project’s fruition. Jihad used to argue with officials of the Ministry of Mines that it was the government that should develop the Calub and Hilala natural gas reserves found in the Ogaden basin. However, the government decided that the gas reserves should be given to private companies. Though the government awarded the gas fields to different foreign companies to date, the project did not materialise.

Recently, the government changed its mind and is currently anticipating to venture into the gas development project. The government is establishing the Ethiopian Petroleum Development Enterprise which will be tasked to develop the gas fields with strategic partners. Jihad was advising the government on the establishment of the new enterprise.
