A man accused of stabbing his wife and two teenage sons with a knife and axe overnight Monday appeared in court Tuesday.

Police say 57-year-old Muruts Hailu used a knife and axe to attack them at the family’s apartment on Wendover Road.

Hailu was scheduled to have a bond hearing Tuesday, but he needed an Ethiopiantranslator so the hearing will have to be rescheduled.

The horror behind the walls of apartment C in the southeast Charlotte complex, are detailed in a police search warrant obtained by WBTV.

Police received a 911 call around 2:30 a.m. from a distraught 16-year-old boy.

When police arrived at the Hampton Crest apartments, they found the boy’s 15-year-old brother lying on the hallway floor and his mother lying on a bedroom floor.

Police believe Hailu used a knife and axe to attack them during an argument.

A neighbor, who asked not to be identified, said her son is friends with the boys. Both attend Myers Park High School.

“My son’s been crying since yesterday. He’s 14. He takes the bus with these kids,” said the neighbor.

Police arrested Hailu at the scene. According to the search warrant, officers found a butcher knife and steak knife in the trash along with mini bottles of alcohol.

A mallet hammer was found in the grass behind the apartment.

The family’s neighbor says the news of the attack is hard to believe.

“Nice people, minding their business, going and coming. I wouldn’t think of these people being in that situation.”

Investigators haven’t released a motive for the attack which still has people questioning why.

At last check Tuesday afternoon, the 16 year old son was listed in surgery atCarolinas Medical Center.

The mother is listed in serious condition and the other son’s condition has not been released.

Hailu is facing six charges including assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

He’s being held on a $125,000 bond.
